Safety in the Kitchen |
Teaching Kitchen Policy |
In a commercial kitchen, safety is everyone’s job. It is a responsibility that must be accepted throughout the working day. As stated many times before, accidents are caused -they do not just happen. They are caused by not knowing the proper way to do a task, or by carelessly performing an operation or job when the attention is focused on something else. It is wise to remember that a careless worker not only jeopardizes his/her own health and well-being, but also jeopardizes those around him/her.
Cooking is considered a fairly safe occupation, but hazards certainly do exist, not only in food preparation but in other related tasks as well. The most common accidents that occur in the kitchen are from cuts, burns, falls, and strains. All of these are types of accidents that happen when extreme carelessness or general horseplay is present. Neither carelessness nor horseplay can be justified nor allowed in a commercial kitchen. Do not run - Persons who rush around in the kitchen tend to take chances the increase the likelihood of an accident. Keep your mind on your work - People who let their attention wander are a menace to themselves and others around them. Lack of interest, personal problems, and distraction by others can all lead to serious accidents. Observe rules for operating equipment - Do not operate kitchen equipment until instructed in the correct operating and maintenance procedures. |
These recommendations are for protection of students and to ensure we have a safe, sanitary and productive environment in the teaching kitchen area.
